Curriculum

Our teachers use a research-based, developmentally appropriate academic curriculum for all classrooms including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Our program is designed to teach the whole child through daily delivery of academic, social-emotional, and spiritual instruction. In addition, we understand the importance of learning through play and employ many NAEYC standards in our program in each classroom. Learn more about NAEYC standards here.

with TEA Gold Star Excellence!

Peas in a Pod Learning Center is honored to announce that the TEA (Texas Education Agency) has awarded our school the Pre K Center of Excellence recognizing us as a gold star school!

We deliver age-appropriate, high-quality instruction using the curriculum that was hand-picked by the Children’s Learning Institute. Academic Curriculum

Frog Street Pre-K is a comprehensive, research-based program that integrates instruction across developmental domains and early learning disciplines. The program is engaging for both teachers and children and is easy to implement!

The cornerstones of the program are:

  • Extensive integration of theme, disciplines, and domains

  • Social and Emotional development includes Dr. Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline ®

  • Differentiated instruction

  • Equity of English and Spanish materials and instruction (dual-language)

  • Joyful approach to learning

Frog Street Pre-K (FSPK) is a high-quality, research-based curriculum organized into ten skill domains that support the integration of curriculum and builds connections between and among all disciplines.

Highlights include innovations to produce measurable gains in student achievement:

  • The authorship team of FSPK brings a wealth of expertise in the field of early childhood classroom experience, social and emotional intelligence, brain development, literacy, second language learning, STEM practices, and cultural sensitivity to the instruction and materials in the curriculum.  Led by senior author, Dr. Pam Schiller, the curriculum integrates content and embeds current research-based best practices through instructional strategies.

  • Another innovation is the inclusion of Conscious Discipline® strategies to support social and emotional intelligence and, in turn, cognitive performance.  FSPK is the sole curriculum integrating this proven program into daily instruction.

  • Differentiated learning strategies and materials for a full range of learners include grouping strategies and scaffolding.  Adaptations for Young Learners Teacher Guide, exclusive to FSPK, is an additional teacher guide targeting literacy, math, and integrated learning centers for learners not ready for the four-year-old program.

  • Instruction in FSPK supports multicultural relevancy with materials and resources for languages other than Spanish.  Dr. Alma Flor Ada, senior author, includes the importance of developing the home language, acquiring literacy naturally, and focuses on cultural sensitivity throughout the curriculum.

  • Equality of materials and instruction in English and Spanish is a distinctive feature of FSPK including language-sensitive adaptations and cultural sensitivity. Sensitivity to letter knowledge and, particularly, phonological awareness is evident in the sequence of instruction.

  • English Language Learner instruction in FSPK incorporates research in second language acquisition with classroom strategies for the Natural Approach, Total Physical Approach, and Cooperative Learning. Materials and resources include pronunciation keys for five languages, full-color photographs, and strategies at point of use for the whole group, small group, and learning center activities.

  • FSPK features distinct home/school/community connections linked to thematic units and the scope and sequence.  Dr. Patricia Edwards, author and past IRA President, contributed research-based best practices on family involvement in the curriculum.  Family Connections resources are available for print or online.

  • Innovative approaches in FSPK incorporate current research-based instruction for literacy included in the National Early Literacy Panel and Beyond, 2013.  In addition, the instructional models in FSPK target strategies to ensure long-term memory, alertness, and information processing based on brain science research. FSPK also incorporates STEM education, an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

  • FSPK provides innovative technology for students with Frog Street Pre-K Interactive Software which contains over 100 Spanish and English activities in phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, written expression, listening comprehension, vocabulary development, and math skills and concepts. Software activities align with weekly instruction for the sustained practice of skills. Learning extends to the home with eBooks of all the literature titles in FSPK.

  • Innovative technology for teachers offers online resources which include interactive lesson planning, teacher guides and eBooks.  The FSPK Digital Online Library guides instruction and is easily accessible from computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Frog Street Press, Inc. is focused on high-quality instruction and materials in the field of early childhood.  Frog Street Pre-K was developed by early childhood experts in every domain of development to create an intentional and integrated curriculum.

Social Emotional Curriculum

Conscious Discipline by Dr. Becky Bailey

Conscious Discipline® is evidence-based, and was named a national model for character education by the Character Education Partnership in 2005. Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive classroom management program and a social-emotional curriculum. It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. It facilitates early childhood teachers in creating “school families” where children and teachers can reclaim joy, helpfulness, and caring as a foundation for the educational process. Conscious Discipline® assists teachers in developing their inner life, empowering them to transform conflict into teaching moments for themselves, their colleagues, and the children and families they serve. Research conducted in schools and centers using Conscious Discipline® shows that it decreases aggression, increases academic scores on state tests, decreases impulsivity/hyperactivity in “difficult” children, increases collegiality of staff, and creates a positive school climate.

Servant Leadership Curriculum

Love in Action

The heart of our mission is to help our students know that they are fully loved, they serve a purpose, and together we can change the world! We teach our students the value of loving one another.  Students learn to help and serve others starting right here in our own school family and then reaching out into our local community. Kids can make a big difference. Teaching children the value of love, joy, peace, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness, patience, generosity, and self control is at the core of our mission!

Our staff helps our students know that they are fully loved, they serve a purpose, and together we can change the world! We teach our students the value of loving one another unconditionally, how to restore broken relationships, to offer help and serve others starting right here in our own school family and then reaching out in our local community. Kids can make a difference, and  teaching children the values of kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, joy, generosity, and self control is at the core of our mission!

Outdoor Learning Curriculum

More Than Play

Peas in a Pod Learning Center provides a unique outdoor learning experience for children. This outdoor learning experience is destined to become a best practice for teaching young children in our community. We are so excited to be offering this special opportunity! Outdoor learning combines problem-solving, flexible thinking, strategizing, and creativity to provide a high-quality teaching and learning experience.

Paint With Water on Fence

Painting with young children not only helps their creative development but it also stimulates their brain. Stimulating children’s brains can also help other areas of their development. When setting up a painting activity for young children, stop and think about what areas of children’s development the activity may be helping.

Gardening With Young Children

We have all heard that being outside in the fresh air has amazing health benefits. We have also heard that planting flowers can be therapeutic. But did you know that gardening has amazing developmental benefits for kids?

Formal Kindergarten Readiness Program

From Pre-K to K-5

Our school teaches a formal Kindergarten Readiness program in the Pre-K classroom. The structure of the classroom consists of small group and whole group instruction in all areas covered in the Texas Pre K Guidelines found at: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=2147495508

Our preschool classroom is enrolled in the Texas School Ready Project found at: http://www.childrenslearninginstitute.org/our-programs/program-overview/tx-school-ready/

We deliver age-appropriate, high-quality instruction using the curriculum that was handpicked by the Children’s Learning Institute. The Children’s Learning Institute implements the Texas School Ready! project as an early education approach that serves at-risk preschool-aged children through shared resources between public and private early childhood education programs. The design of Texas School Ready! increases children’s school readiness through five evidence-driven components: research-based curriculum, technology-driven child progress monitoring, facilitated teacher professional development, ongoing teacher mentoring, and sustainability.

Children who are enrolled for 2 years in the Pre K class receive the best up-to-date early instruction in both whole group and small group form. Year 2 students participate in the early reading group instruction which fosters early reading. Students are equipped to read levels 1-3 or A-C books on their own or with a little help of the parent. Books are first read in class and then taken home to practice with parents. Your child will also increase their understanding of math, writing, science, and social studies concepts during their 2nd year at our school using daily small group and whole group instruction.

Our Pre-K classroom is specifically designed to formally prepare preschoolers for Kindergarten. Since we opened in 2010, we have taught 1st and 2nd year PreK students with huge success in continuing to grow them individually and move them forward even further. We keep you informed of their progress through assessment testing and parent conferences. These formal TSR assessments are conducted at the beginning, middle, and end of the year.

Dual Language

Peas in a Pod Learning Center implements a dual (two way) language program in the Kinder Ready classroom! We have also expanded the dual language program throughout the school to expose even more of our students! We introduce students to both English and Spanish languages at the same time in a simple and effective way preparing students to enter the dual (two way) language programs in the school districts at the Kindergarten level more prepared while enriching learning for all students attending our school.

Children are exposed to both English and Spanish on a daily basis through a combination of basic instruction and fun activities. As a result, they are provided with a foundation of bilingual skills that are becoming a necessary tool for success in today’s world.

Dual language education programs help to improve children’s learning abilities, grades in school, and career success.
